Internal Strife and NDA Friction: JDU Reviews MLC Election Reverses Amid Growing Ally Tensions

The Janata Dal (United) convened a high-stakes, closed-door review meeting at its state headquarters in Patna to evaluate its performance in the recently concluded Bihar Legislative Council (MLC) elections. While the ruling party continues to navigate its dominant position within the state’s political landscape, the meeting exposed deep internal fractures, sharp recriminations against local saboteurs, and growing friction within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) over coalition ethics.
Fallout From MLC Reverses and Allegations of Sabotage
The review session focused heavily on the party's unexpected setbacks in crucial constituencies, particularly the Tirhut Graduates' and Saran Teachers' seats. Defeated candidates and party loyalists voiced open frustration to the leadership, pointing to rampant internal sabotage ("bheetarghat") and alleged non-cooperation from local alliance machinery.
Tirhut candidate Abhishek Jha and Saran candidate Anand Pushkar detailed how subterranean local opposition and a lack of unified grassroots coordination crippled their electoral campaigns. Adding fuel to the fire, senior party leaders—including MLC Neeraj Kumar—submitted direct written grievances targeting senior leaders and cabinet colleagues, alleging that internal factions actively undermined official party candidates to benefit rival or independent contenders.
The Independent MLA Controversy and BJP Friction
The political heat extends far beyond internal party disputes, directly straining ties between the JD(U) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Controversy erupted after newly elected independent MLCs Bansidhar Brijwasi (Tirhut) and Rahul Raj (Saran) the latter a former BJP rebel who defeated the JD(U) nominee were formally welcomed into the BJP fold shortly after their victories.
The move has triggered sharp reactions from JD(U) leadership, who question the propriety of coalition partners absorbing independent candidates who triumphed directly against official NDA-allocated JD(U) seats. JD(U) state chief Umesh Kushwaha and other senior functionaries raised concerns over whether basic coalition dharma and alliance ethics are being respected at the grassroots level.
Opposition Capitalizes on Coalition Turbulence
Seizing upon the visible cracks within the ruling alliance, the opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj party have intensified their attacks. Opposition leaders have approached the Legislative Council authorities demanding the immediate disqualification of the crossover independent MLCs, citing strict violations under the Tenth Schedule (Anti-Defection Law).
As the JD(U) leadership processes the district-level feedback and written complaints submitted during the Patna review, party insiders indicate that strict disciplinary action will be identified against rebels. However, managing the delicate post-election equilibrium with the BJP remains a formidable challenge for the ruling establishment as Bihar navigates its evolving legislative equations.
