Samrat Choudhary’s NDA Coordination Efforts Face Internal Tensions Ahead of Bihar MLC Polls

Samrat Choudhary Attempts to Resolve JD(U) Dispute
Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary faced an internal coordination challenge within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) ahead of the October 23, 2026, Bihar Legislative Council elections. His efforts to resolve the dispute between JD(U) MLA Anant Singh and the party’s Patna Graduates’ constituency candidate Neeraj Kumar failed to produce a breakthrough before polling.
The disagreement became a concern for the ruling alliance as Anant Singh openly supported Jan Suraaj Party candidate Anuj Singh against Neeraj Kumar, the JD(U)’s official nominee. The two leaders have been political rivals, and the dispute continued despite intervention by senior JD(U) leaders.
Anant Singh Continues Support for Jan Suraaj Candidate
Anant Singh maintained his support for Anuj Singh during the campaign, while also criticising Neeraj Kumar. Senior JD(U) leaders attempted to intervene, with Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, popularly known as Lalan Singh, taking up the matter in an effort to prevent the dispute from affecting the party’s electoral campaign.
The disagreement highlighted the difficulty of maintaining coordination within the alliance when individual leaders supported candidates outside their parties’ official choices.
NDA Leadership Warns of Disciplinary Action
At an NDA legislature party meeting held at Choudhary’s residence on October 9, alliance leaders discussed unity, coordination and election strategy. Choudhary warned that stern action would be taken against those working against NDA candidates.
JD(U) leaders also indicated that disciplinary action could follow if party members continued campaigning against the alliance’s official nominees. The meeting included representatives from the BJP, JD(U), Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), Rashtriya Lok Morcha and Hindustani Awam Morcha.
Despite the discussions, the dispute involving Anant Singh and Neeraj Kumar remained unresolved before polling.
Wider Coordination Challenges Within the NDA
The JD(U) disagreement was not the only coordination issue confronting the NDA during the MLC election campaign. The alliance also faced dissent involving leaders associated with the Rashtriya Lok Morcha in the Saran Teachers’ constituency.
The eight constituencies going to the polls included four graduates’ and four teachers’ seats. Maintaining support for official candidates across these constituencies was an important organisational challenge for the alliance leadership.
What the Dispute Means for Bihar Politics
The episode drew attention to the role of internal party rivalries and local political relationships in legislative council elections. Choudhary’s efforts focused on strengthening coordination among NDA partners and ensuring that members supported the alliance’s nominated candidates.
The dispute also demonstrated that agreements reached by senior leaders do not necessarily end disagreements at the constituency level. The election campaign placed alliance discipline and coordination under scrutiny as Bihar’s political parties competed for representation in the Legislative Council.
Conclusion: Samrat Choudhary’s attempt to resolve the Anant Singh–Neeraj Kumar dispute did not secure a pre-poll settlement. The episode underscored the coordination challenges facing the NDA as it sought to maintain unity across Bihar’s Legislative Council contests.
