According to the results update published on October 28, 2026, the BJP has strengthened its position in several constituencies, while opposition parties have secured victories in key contests. Bihar has delivered a mixed verdict, highlighting the competitive nature of state-level political contests.
BJP and Samajwadi Party Share Key Wins in Uttar Pradesh
In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP and Samajwadi Party have each secured a victory in the Lucknow and Varanasi teachers’ constituencies, respectively. The BJP also won the Meerut Graduates’ and Teachers’ constituencies through Dinesh Kumar Goyal and Shri Chand Sharma.
In Agra, the Samajwadi Party candidate was leading in the teachers’ constituency at the time of the report. Counting continued in other constituencies amid tight security, with both parties raising allegations concerning the counting process.
The results are politically significant for the BJP and SP as they seek to strengthen their influence among teachers and graduates ahead of future electoral contests in Uttar Pradesh.
Bihar Delivers a Mixed Verdict
Bihar’s Legislative Council elections have produced a mixed outcome, with results declared for four of the eight seats covered in the update. The BJP, RJD, Jan Suraaj Party and an Independent candidate each won one seat.
The RJD registered a major victory in the Patna Teachers’ constituency by defeating five-term BJP MLC Nawal Kishore Yadav. The result represents a setback for the BJP in a constituency where its candidate had enjoyed a long tenure.
The Jan Suraaj Party also recorded a notable victory in Darbhanga Teachers’, where Suresh Rai defeated Congress leader and former Bihar Congress president Madan Mohan Jha. The result marks an important breakthrough for the party in the Legislative Council elections.
In the Tirhut Teachers’ constituency, BJP candidate Narendra Prasad Singh defeated sitting CPI MLC Sanjay Singh, while Independent candidate Bhushan Kumar Jha finished second.
Meanwhile, JD(U) candidate Neeraj Kumar was leading RJD candidate Dilip Rai in the Patna Graduates’ constituency, with Jan Suraaj Party candidate Anuj Singh in third place at the time of the report.
With four seats still to be accounted for in the overall eight-seat contest, the final distribution of seats remained subject to further results.
BJP-JD(S) Alliance Scores Victory in Karnataka
In Karnataka, the BJP-JD(S) alliance secured a significant victory in the Bengaluru Teachers’ Constituency. Alliance candidate AP Ranganath defeated sitting MLC Puttanna, delivering a setback to Congress.
The constituency recorded a voter turnout of 81.98%, indicating substantial participation in the contest.
The NDA also secured victory in the North-East Teachers’ Constituency, where Shashil G Namoshi defeated Congress candidate Sharanappa Mattur. The outcomes strengthen the position of the BJP-led alliance in these Legislative Council constituencies.
Maharashtra Sees Contest Between Mahayuti and MVA
In Maharashtra, the ruling Mahayuti alliance and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) contested all five Legislative Council seats, with 182 candidates in the fray.
The BJP remained the largest party in the 78-member Legislative Council, with 35 MLCs, followed by Shiv Sena with 12 and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) with 10. Congress and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) each held five seats, while the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) faction held two.
The contest is important for both alliances as they seek to consolidate their legislative strength and political influence in the state.
What the Results Mean for Indian Politics
The MLC election results reflect differing political trends across states. The BJP has secured important wins in Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka, while the RJD and Jan Suraaj Party have made notable gains in Bihar.
The defeat of sitting MLCs in Bihar and Karnataka also demonstrates the competitive nature of teachers’ constituency elections. For the Jan Suraaj Party, its victory in Darbhanga provides an opportunity to build its political profile beyond its existing support base.
Further results from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh will be important in determining the final picture of the Legislative Council contests.
