Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and Bihar Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav met senior advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal at his residence in Delhi on Monday night. The meeting, held ahead of further proceedings in the land-for-jobs case, has drawn attention to the legal challenges facing the RJD leadership.
According to sources cited in media reports, the discussion between the leaders focused on legal representation in the land-for-jobs case. However, no official statement has been released detailing the agenda or the specific issues discussed during the meeting.
Lalu and Tejashwi Meet Kapil Sibal in Delhi
Lalu Prasad Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav reportedly reached Kapil Sibal's Delhi residence late on Monday night. Sibal, a senior advocate and Rajya Sabha member, has previously represented Lalu Prasad in legal proceedings connected to the case.
The meeting is being viewed in the context of the ongoing legal proceedings involving the RJD chief and members of his family. However, the exact details of the discussion have not been officially confirmed.
What Is the Land-for-Jobs Case?
The land-for-jobs case relates to alleged irregularities in railway recruitment between 2004 and 2009, when Lalu Prasad Yadav was the Union Railway Minister in the UPA-I government.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has alleged that candidates were appointed to Group-D positions in different railway zones in exchange for land parcels transferred to members of the Yadav family or companies allegedly associated with them.
The case involves allegations of corruption, cheating and criminal conspiracy. These allegations are subject to judicial proceedings and must not be treated as established guilt.
ED Investigation and Court Proceedings
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) registered a money-laundering case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, based on the CBI case.
The investigation has involved several members of the Yadav family, including Lalu Prasad Yadav, Rabri Devi and Tejashwi Yadav, along with other individuals.
A Delhi court has been hearing arguments concerning the framing of charges in the money-laundering proceedings. The ED had earlier completed its arguments on the issue, and the court subsequently indicated that arguments would be heard afresh.
The case has therefore remained an important legal concern for the RJD leadership.
Political Significance for the RJD
Lalu Prasad Yadav remains a central figure in the RJD, while Tejashwi Yadav leads the party's activities in Bihar as Leader of the Opposition.
Their meeting with Kapil Sibal has brought renewed attention to the legal proceedings involving the family. The case also remains a significant political issue in Bihar, where the RJD continues to be a major opposition party.
For now, the meeting has highlighted the legal preparations surrounding the case, although the leaders have not publicly disclosed the details of their discussion.
