JD(U) Moves to Disqualify Anant Singh as Mokama MLA, Political Rift Deepens After Party Expulsion

The political confrontation between the Janata Dal (United) and Mokama MLA Anant Kumar Singh has intensified after the party formally approached the Bihar Legislative Assembly Speaker seeking his disqualification under the anti-defection provisions of the Constitution.
JD(U) state president Umesh Singh Kushwaha submitted a recommendation letter along with a 10-page dossier containing documentary evidence and video footage to Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar on October 26. The party has accused Singh of working against its official candidate during the recent Bihar Legislative Council elections.
The development follows Singh's expulsion from the JD(U) for six years on October 24. His wife, former Mokama MLA Neelam Devi, was also expelled from the party over alleged anti-party activities.
Why JD(U) Took Action Against Anant Singh
The dispute escalated during the Patna Graduates' constituency election to the Bihar Legislative Council.
The JD(U) had fielded sitting MLC Neeraj Kumar as its official candidate. However, Anant Singh openly supported Jan Suraaj candidate Anuj Singh and campaigned against the party's nominee.
Singh reportedly accompanied Anuj Singh during his nomination process and appealed to voters to support him despite instructions from senior JD(U) leaders.
The party accused the Mokama MLA of repeatedly disregarding organisational directives and making objectionable remarks against its senior leadership.
JD(U) state president Umesh Singh Kushwaha subsequently announced the termination of Singh's primary membership for six years.
Ten-Page Dossier Submitted to Assembly Speaker
On October 26, Kushwaha visited the Bihar Legislative Assembly and submitted a formal recommendation seeking action against Anant Singh's membership.
The documents reportedly included a 10-page dossier and video footage intended to establish the party's allegations of anti-party activities.
Kushwaha also met the Assembly secretary to seek an update on the matter, as Speaker Prem Kumar was unavailable at the time.
The JD(U) has invoked the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution, which contains provisions dealing with disqualification of legislators on grounds of defection.
However, the party's recommendation does not automatically terminate Singh's Assembly membership. The matter must be examined by the Speaker under the applicable constitutional provisions and procedures.
Anant Singh's Dispute With Neeraj Kumar
The political disagreement between Anant Singh and Neeraj Kumar has a long history.
Their rivalry dates back to the 2015 Mokama Assembly election, when Anant Singh contested as an Independent candidate and defeated Neeraj Kumar, who was then the JD(U)'s official nominee.
The differences between the two leaders continued even after Singh returned to the JD(U).
During the latest MLC election campaign, Singh publicly opposed Neeraj Kumar and questioned the party leadership's decision to support him.
He argued that Neeraj Kumar had previously worked against him during elections and maintained that he was prepared to face disciplinary action for supporting Anuj Singh.
Neelam Devi Faces Government-Related Action
The political developments have also affected Anant Singh's wife, Neelam Devi.
Following her expulsion from the JD(U), the Bihar government withdrew the minister-of-state status previously granted to her through her position in the state-level 20-Point Programme Implementation Committee.
She was also removed from the committee and directed to vacate her official government residence at 1, Mall Road, Patna, by November 25, 2026.
These administrative decisions have added another dimension to the political dispute involving the Singh family.
Nitish Kumar's JD(U) Faces an Internal Political Challenge
The action against Anant Singh has brought questions about party discipline and internal differences within the JD(U) into focus.
The dispute became particularly visible during the Patna Graduates' MLC election, when Singh openly supported a candidate from Jan Suraaj instead of the JD(U)'s official nominee.
The party's decision to seek his disqualification indicates that it intends to pursue the matter beyond expulsion from its organisational structure.
However, the final decision on his Assembly membership rests with the competent constitutional authority.
What Happens Next?
The Bihar Assembly Speaker will have to examine the JD(U)'s recommendation, supporting documents and the applicable provisions of the Tenth Schedule before deciding whether to initiate or proceed with disqualification proceedings.
Until a formal decision is taken, Anant Singh continues to remain the elected MLA from Mokama.
The dispute is likely to remain an important issue in Bihar politics as the JD(U) leadership seeks to enforce party discipline while Anant Singh's political future remains subject to the Assembly's decision.
The coming developments will determine whether the confrontation remains limited to party disciplinary action or leads to a change in representation in the Bihar Legislative Assembly.
