Samrat Choudhary Takes Oath as Bihar Chief Minister

Patna, April 15, 2026
Samrat Choudhary took oath as the Chief Minister of Bihar on April 15, 2026, marking a new phase in the political leadership of the state. The oath-taking ceremony was held at Lok Bhavan in Patna, where Bihar Governor Syed Ata Hasnain administered the oath of office and secrecy to Choudhary. The Bihar Chief Minister's Secretariat officially records April 15, 2026 as the date on which Samrat Choudhary assumed office as Chief Minister.
Choudhary became the first leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party to serve as Chief Minister of Bihar. His elevation followed the change in the state's political leadership after Nitish Kumar stepped down as Chief Minister and moved to the Rajya Sabha.
The swearing-in ceremony also included the induction of senior Janata Dal (United) leaders Vijay Kumar Choudhary and Bijendra Prasad Yadav, who took oath as members of the Council of Ministers and were designated Deputy Chief Ministers. Their inclusion reflected the continuation of the NDA's coalition arrangement in the state government.
Samrat Choudhary's political career has included responsibilities in the Bihar Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council, ministerial positions in the state government, leadership of the Bihar BJP and the post of Deputy Chief Minister. Before becoming Chief Minister, he served as Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar. The Bihar government describes his political background as including extensive experience in state politics and governance.
After taking the oath, Choudhary said that he would immediately begin working for the prosperity of Bihar. He also stated that the state would continue to be governed under the Modi-Nitish model.
The new government begins its tenure with several areas of governance receiving attention, including infrastructure development, employment, industrial growth, education, healthcare and public-service delivery. The Chief Minister's Secretariat has described development, good governance and efficient public-service delivery as areas of focus for the administration.
The change in leadership is also significant from the perspective of Bihar's political history. Choudhary's assumption of the Chief Minister's office places a BJP leader at the head of the Bihar government for the first time. At the same time, the participation of JD(U) leaders in senior government positions reflects the coalition structure through which the state administration is operating.
Following the ceremony, Choudhary went to the state secretariat and addressed senior government officials. The Chief Minister's Secretariat records that he addressed senior officials on April 15 and issued directions concerning the functioning of the administration.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Samrat Choudhary after the oath-taking ceremony. The Prime Minister also extended his congratulations to Vijay Kumar Choudhary and Bijendra Prasad Yadav after their appointment as Deputy Chief Ministers.
Samrat Choudhary's oath-taking marks an important change in Bihar's political leadership. The coming period will focus on how the new administration implements its announced priorities, manages the coalition government and addresses development and public-service issues across the state.
