INDIA Bloc Steps Up Protests Over ECI and SIR, BJP Leaders Criticise Opposition

Opposition Raises Concerns Over Electoral Rolls
Political tensions between the opposition INDIA bloc and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have continued over the Election Commission of India (ECI) and its Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Opposition leaders have alleged irregularities in the voter-list revision process and raised concerns about electoral transparency.
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav has been among the prominent opposition figures participating in the protests. In Bihar, INDIA bloc leaders marched towards Lok Bhavan in Patna and sought action over what they described as irregularities in the SIR exercise. The leaders demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
INDIA Bloc Seeks Action and Electoral Safeguards
During a protest march in Bihar, opposition parties submitted a memorandum to the Governor, seeking a halt to the SIR process and raising concerns about voter deletions. Their demands also included restoring names they allege were wrongly removed from electoral rolls and reviewing the framework governing the appointment of election commissioners.
The INDIA bloc has argued that transparent voter lists and impartial election administration are essential to ensuring a fair electoral process. These allegations and demands represent the opposition’s position; they should not be treated as established findings of wrongdoing.
BJP Leaders Respond to Opposition Protests
BJP leaders have pushed back against the opposition’s allegations and criticised its protest strategy. Union minister Giriraj Singh described the INDIA bloc’s march towards the Supreme Court as political theatrics and questioned the opposition’s criticism of election procedures. His remarks reflect the BJP’s response to the continuing dispute over the ECI and SIR.
Political Dispute Continues
The controversy has widened beyond Bihar, with opposition leaders also taking their concerns over voter-list revisions and the Election Commission to the Supreme Court. The dispute has become a broader political argument over electoral transparency, the functioning of constitutional institutions and the safeguards available to voters.
The key issues remain the accuracy of electoral rolls, the handling of objections and deletions, and the responses of the Election Commission and political parties to the allegations. Any determination of specific wrongdoing would require evidence and assessment by the appropriate authorities or courts.
“INDIA bloc leaders, including RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, have intensified protests over the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and alleged irregularities. The demonstrations have triggered a political exchange, with opposition parties demanding electoral safeguards and BJP leaders questioning their protests.”
